Ministry Involvement
An essential part of the Kaléo program is ministry involvement, and you have lots of opportunity to serve.
At Qwanoes
For several weekends, you will be involved in ministry right at home—that is, at Camp Qwanoes! Throughout the year Qwanoes offers several weekend retreats for children, teens, and adults. Camp ministry is an integral part of the Kaléo program, which will give you opportunity to develop your leadership skills right here. You will also sometimes work alongside a staff member in their ministry.
Local Churches
We enable each student to connect with the life and ministry of one local evangelical church throughout the course of the year. We want our students to learn and practice commitment to a local church community and will make every effort to keep you regularly involved in a fellowship that will help you grow and give you an outlet to serve. The Cowichan Valley has deep spiritual needs, and students will have opportunity to contribute to weekly opportunities such as youth ministry, kids clubs, Sunday school and worship leading.
Ministry Trip
The spring semester includes a ministry trip in which students come alongside existing ministries locally or around the world. Past opportunities have included reaching out to the small, isolated communities on the West Coast; working alongside an inner-city ministry in Vancouver; modeling Christ to children in the capital city of Mongolia; coming alongside young camp leaders in Venezuela and Colombia; helping a family rebuild their lives in New Orleans; prayer trekking through the Himalayas in Northern India; and assisting a ministry to 20,000 families in New York; personal witness as volunteers at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics; and helping bring hope to an unreached people group in Mexico. Most ministry trips are approximately two weeks in length.
These ministry trips give students the wonderful opportunity to step into leadership roles and watch God at work in and through their teams. Students are able to choose their destination—if a more distant trip is chosen, fundraising for transportation may be part of the preparation, or students may choose to contribute to the cost of the trip themselves.
Other Ministry Experiences
As well as regular involvement in local churches, students are exposed to a variety of ministry experiences on a regular or one-time basis. A few examples include inner-city ministry, First Nations ministry, and weekend youth worship events.
